By what logic someone in those forbidden condition will stop downloading this beta product? If you are from Cuba and US has prohibited export to your country but the website allows you to download, what will you do? How can one check if is on Specially Designated Terrorists or Designated Narcotic Traffickers lists?

In terms of web usability this form is futile for 99% of the people accessing it and the rest 1% that are terrorists, Cubans or narcotic traffickers will not really care about complying with its demands.

Last Friday and Saturday I was attending PHP Barcelona Conference. Barcelona is a TOP10 tourist destination but when it comes to PHP we are a small province town, and as you may suspect Gaudi and beaches are somehow more famous here than programmers. But we exist and most of us try to do their best and this happens thanks to Barcelona PHP Programmers Group.

The program had enough presentation to choose from.

These are the presentations that I’ve attended:
Working with Web Services – by Lorna Mitchell, not bad but very basic. Probably good for PHP programmers who never worked with an API or webservice before. Alex Puig presentation about actually implementing an API was far more interesting.

Trees in Database – by Lorenzo Alberton. This one was better even though it wasn’t a PHP subject. I already knew and implemented some of this advanced data models, but not all. Interesting.

Simple is Hard – by Rasmus Lerdorf. Good. I love people that tell me I am stupid.
http://talks.php.net/show/phpbcn

Ajax for scalability by Erik Schultink from Tuenti. Good advices but nothing different from Facebook presentations seen on InfoQ and good only if you have the site with most traffic in your country .

Agile Development with PHP in Practice by Lars Jankowfsky. Basic.

I’ve also been to an Oracle on PHP workshop. Database Resident Connection Pool on 11g seems interesting.

PHP Security Audits – by Seguy Damien. Very clear and nice. Give me and Andrea something to discuss. I think I should do PHP and Javascript audits. Not only security but also code improvements.

The overall organization was good. Food and drinks, books with discounts.

The State of QA Tools for PHP by Sebastian Bergmann. Probably one of the most interesting presentations of the conference.

I did attend to a Phing seminar I think it is a pretty useful tool that I cant wait to test.

I was also interested about the other subject that runs in parallel PHP Industrialization. I want to see the GURU inventor of PHP itself, but nevertheless I don’t want to see him to take a picture with him. This is not an amusement park. I want to hear something enlightening. I know that I can expect too much, it happen before at a PHP event with Zeev Suraski, from where I did go dissapointed. I hope people come in Barcelona and treat the conference seriously, and don’t take this a a vacation. I am absolutely fed up with tourists.

Anyway, this post is about the power of Twitter, which so far I was underestimating. How cool is to have Rasmus responding to you directly and in a non official manner?

Priceless.

PS. in January 2009 I was creating Rasmus Lerdorf page in ro.wikipedia. So probably exists a Law of Compensation. :)

Sometimes I give suggestion to my friends about software and hardware. I started working on a HC91 and since then I worked on various types of hardware. I love computers and Macs alike, but this is not a reason to stop reasoning.

These days you don’t need a Mac. Not even in the old days. Some hardcore DTP professionals are probably the only ones that had any kind of argument, but those days are long over (the days of Corel on Mac – awful ).

Mac products are restrictive, cost way too much, have little or none upgrade capability, have a stable but closed OS, limited active community in development of software.

If you need something nice in your house and you like light curves buy a VASE.
If you need some self esteem in front of your friends, grow a PAIR.
If you need a good stable friendly interface for browsing install LINUX UBUNTU.

For everything else you can buy a cheaper, stronger computer, do your stuff and get out of the herd of marketing Apple slaves.

This is not a suggestion anymore. Stop buying Apple.

Just in case that you were wondering how the new google browser identifies itself:

[HTTP_USER_AGENT] => Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.2.149.27 Safari/525.13

It seems that the Mozilla header doesn’t help to much when trying to access sites like “office live”:http://home.officelive.com.

First impressions are very good. Fast and simple browser. And although I like plugins and cluttering with more or less interesting and helpful tools maybe it will be idea to keep it simple.

First bug: “dojo test”:http://dojocampus.org/explorer/#Dojo_Drag%20And%20Drop.
Try to drag the yellow box in the movable demo and check against mozilla.

Second bug: it appears the google chrome doesn’t like frames. phpMyAdmin for example just displays a blank page after the connexion.

13. eMule —> LOL
