Shark fins imports/exports from EU

I was quite surprised some time ago when I was working with the new Eurostat taxonomies, that in 2012 Eurostat introduces 2 products that I did not think EU should sell. I am talking about:

03057110 SHARK FINS, SMOKED

03057190 1SHARK FINS, DRIED, SALTED OR IN BRINE (EXCL. SMOKED)

The fact they appear is as a separate product and not hidden under some obscure nomenclature like “fish parts” is because probably are taxed quite high and somebody want to control the distribution.

I was quite surprised on the numbers for this first 3 months. The biggest number is 21 tons in a month. Keep in mind that this are only the shark fins and more than 95% of the weight of the shark is “humanely” thrown back to the ocean.

Biggest exporters: Spain and Ireland. Biggest importers: Hong Kong and (surprisingly) Portugal.
I used Tableau to give a quick look at the data (imported by Capia from Eurostat).
